Friday 28th July
We awoke this morning to bleak skies and the weather continued to worsen throughout the day. We were moving on to Chester for our last day in England and planned to visit a couple of tourist spots during the day. On the way to Chester our trip was delayed for ober half an hour because of roadworks and we crawled along for for nearly an hour in drizzling rain. We checked in at the hotel and grabbed some lunch. Vicki and I just bought some takeway next door to the hotel but Cheryl & Lyn ordered theirs at the hotel and it took over an hour before we could get back on the road again.
Because of the delay we decided to do just one thing whoch was Lyme Park supposedly not far from Chester. Turns out it was further than we originally thought. We were on a motorway for most of the journey but even though it was 4 lanes on both sides for much of the way we rarely managed to travel above 30 miles an hour. Don't know if it's like this every day or just Fridays and everyone knocks off work arly to get away for the weekend. The rain was getting progressively heavier and traffic was constantly entering and leaving the motorway at each entry and exit and there were quite a few. The traffic is so heavy on the motorway that they have traffic lights at each entry point regulating the number of cars that can enter at one time. By the time we reached Lyme it was just befoe 4.00pm. This is the site they used for Pemberley in the Colin Firth production of Pridee and Prejudive. Chatsworth Hall which we visited previously was for the Keira Knighley film. It was too late to see the interior of the house so we were restricted to the gardens which were due to close at 5.00pm. We donned our wet weather gear and braved the elements. It's a lovely property but it was cold & wet so wasn't particularly pleasant viewing. We saw the lake that Mr Darcy swam in but obviously it was too cold for him today - nowhere to be seen. After 5.00pm we returned to the car park and drove around for a while trying to sight some deer as they have a deer park on the property. Obviously the deer had moe sense than us and we hiding out somewhere out of the rain. We finally gave up and headed back to the motorway which was just as congested as before and raining all the way and a litlle bit darker. We made it back to the hotel at about 7.30pm and I was glad to get out of the car. It was my turn to drive today and I was feeling petty tired by the time we finished.
All in all we've been petty lucky with the weather so I guess we had to catch a bit of rain eventually.
